Accredited Online Colleges in Alaska

The largest state in the nation by area, Alaska was the 49th state to join the U.S., entering the union in January 1959. Although it covers 663,268 square miles, its population in the 2008 census was only 686,293, giving it an average of just over one person per square mile. It’s the least densely populated state as well as one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. The state’s economy is largely devoted to the oil and gas industries, with the bulk of revenue coming from petroleum extraction. After that, the main exports are seafood, including salmon and cod. Despite the harsh winters, there’s an upside to living in the state: Alaskan residents can qualify to participate in sharing of the dividends from annual growth in the Alaska Permanent Fund–the 2008 payout was $3,269 a piece.

Much of Alaska is uninhabitable, and for that reason, the list of online colleges and universities in the area is short. But despite the the fact that there are only a few from which to choose, Alaska prides itself on its higher education system, seeking accreditation from institutions such as the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the Council on Occupational Education, and the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. The state of Alaska offers scholarships to many students. AVTECT, Alaska’s Institute of Technology, offers training programs in technology, welding, mechanics, and more, and as the backing of the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
