Accredited Online Colleges in Maine
The northernmost state in New England and the easternmost state of the contiguous 48, Maine is home to 1.3 million residents. Maine’s most populous city is Portland, with 64,000 people, and a booming port town which is by tonnage, the busiest in New England.
Maine’s higher education is offered by an array of private and public universities, with 18 offering online programs. The largest university in the state is the University of Maine system. In total, the system has almost 35,000 students enrolled among its seven branches. The flagship branch is the Orono institution, with about 9,000 undergraduates. The state of Maine also features several outstanding private institutions that offer online programs including Husson University, who’s alumni include former Maine governor Paul LePage. The state’s only private, faith-based, college to offer online programs is St. Joseph’s College of Maine.
Colleges and Universities in Maine receive their accreditation almost exclusively through the New England Association of Schools and College’s Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. The institution accredits all of the state’s public, private, and for-profit schools. They also provide accreditation to five other New England states including, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Community colleges and two-year, for-profit schools are also accredited by the New England Association of Schools and College’s Commission on Technical and Career Institutions.
