Colleges and universities in Montana will be accredited by either a national or regional accrediting agency. In order to attain regional accreditation, schools must apply with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, which represents Montana and other Northwestern states. Schools with national accreditation will be accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges, the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, the Council on Occupational Education, or the Distance Education and Training Council, Accrediting Commission. If a school in Montana does not hold accreditation from one of these regional or national bodies, it will not be considered accredited. Schools may also have secondary specialized accreditation for programs in areas such as arts and humanities, education training, law, community and social services, personal care and services, and healthcare.
