Accredited Online Colleges in Montana

Known as “Big Sky Country,” Montana is fourth in the nation in terms of land area but 44th in population, making it one of the least densely populated of the United States. The mountainous state has more than 75 named ranges that are part of the Rocky Mountains. The state’s economy revolves around agriculture, with major crops including barley, wheat, oats, rye, lumber exports, and cattle and sheep ranching. Tourism is also a big factor, with three of the five entrances to Yellowstone Park found in Montana. There’s also Glacier National Park, which covers more than 1 million acres, and Flathead Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the country. Montana is home to about 967,000 people, and its biggest city is Billings, whose total metropolitan area includes 150,000 residents.

Higher education in Montana includes both public and private colleges and universities. Montana State University and the University of Montana represent the two main public university systems in the state. The Montana State University system includes campuses in Bozeman, Billings, and Havre, and also a College of Technology in Great Falls. The University of Montana-Missoula is the main campus of the University of Montana System, which includes four locations across the state. U of M is ranked 17th in the nation and fifth among public universities in producing Rhodes Scholars. There are also many colleges founded by Native American tribes in Montana, including Blackfeet Community College, Chief Dull Knife College, and Salish Kootenai College, which offer distance learning opportunities.

Colleges and universities in Montana will be accredited by either a national or regional accrediting agency. In order to attain regional accreditation, schools must apply with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, which represents Montana and other Northwestern states. Schools with national accreditation will be accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges, the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, the Council on Occupational Education, or the Distance Education and Training Council, Accrediting Commission. If a school in Montana does not hold accreditation from one of these regional or national bodies, it will not be considered accredited. Schools may also have secondary specialized accreditation for programs in areas such as arts and humanities, education training, law, community and social services, personal care and services, and healthcare.
