Most Affordable Online RN to BSN Programs 2023
Nurses have one of the most essential jobs in the healthcare industry.
Let’s face it, people will always get sick, and someone will have to look after them. Nurses work in a wide variety of environments: hospitals, physician’s offices, homes, nursing care facilities, schools, and more.
The demand for high-skilled, qualified nurses is constant–especially as the baby boomer population enters retirement and post-retirement years.
Nursing is a job field that offers stability and is essentially recession-proof. However, to keep up with the demand, the industry is trending towards requiring registered nurses to have more education. EDsmart is the right place to come to learn more about keeping up with this changing demand.

Overview of RN to BSN | Rankings
What’s the difference between an RN and a BSN?
What’s the main difference between a nurse that has an RN title and a BSN? The amount of schooling. Both RNs and BSNs are considered registered nurses.
A person can become an RN by getting an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) and obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). These two routes end in a nursing license exam which confers the right to practice as a nurse.
More education is increasingly becoming a requirement for many places where an RN used to suffice. An RN without a BSN may also find themselves unable to progress professionally because senior roles require more education. An RN without a BSN may find themselves stuck in the salary cap without any way to break through as well.
What is an RN to BSN Program?
In short, an RN to BSN program is an opportunity for current working registered nurses that may only have an associate’s degree in nursing to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Most of these programs are available online and differ significantly from traditional BSN degree programs. For instance, these programs require students to be current registered nurses with active licenses. Some of these programs also have medical requirements and require a background check to prove that potential students are upstanding members of the nursing community.
Typical BSN Curriculum
A typical RN to BSN online program differs from traditional BSN programs because they have a different audience group. A BSN program is designed for college students hoping to graduate and become nurses. An RN to BSN program is designed for current nurses looking to upgrade their credentials. Because of this, many RN-to-BSN program students are non-traditional adult learners that have busy lives and cannot attend class full-time.
Additionally, these programs tend to trim out all the “general education” requirement classes, as most students will already have taken them during their completion of their associate’s degrees.
Programs cover various nursing courses, including critical thinking, research, communication, leadership and management, health promotion, professional development, and more. Completion of the entire BSN degree usually requires a total of 120 credit hours.
Most online RN to BSN programs do not require students to be full-time and are accepting part-time students. Some programs do not even require students to come to campus at all.
While the course material is important, it only counts if the program is accredited. An accredited program is a program that has met the high standards of quality set out by the governing bodies of nursing in the country (for example, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education CCNE).
Going to school can be an expensive proposition with the average tuition costs rising. This is especially true for those looking to enroll in a nursing program like an RN to BSN program. For students hoping to find the cheapest RN to BSN online program, this list will serve as a great starting point.
This ranking of the cheapest RN to BSN programs online is based solely on net price.
A college’s net price gives a more accurate view of what students can expect to pay after receiving financial aid, compared to the college’s tuition or sticker price.
We have chosen to show other factors that are of interest to students such as graduation and retention rates, and the percentage of students receiving financial aid. This way potential students can see how satisfied they will be, how likely they are to graduate at a given school and how likely it will be that they pay the net price. All data points were gathered from the most recent National Center for Education Statistics database.
