Overview
Mississippi inherits its name from the river system that served as America's gateway to the west for over 100 years. The Mississippi River spans more than 2,300 miles, stretching from Minnesota down to the Gulf of Mexico, and cutting through a larger tract of land than any river system on the North American continent. The state of Mississippi itself boasts a population of almost 3 million people, and the state capital of Jackson is home to 173,000 alone.
With such a humid and subtropical climate, agriculture is still a substantial component of Mississippi's economy. This industry employs 30% of the population, both directly and indirectly. Poultry and eggs are at the top of the state's production list, followed by forestry, soybeans, corn, rice, catfish, hay, cattle, cotton, and more. The state is home to 42,000 working farms that cover 11 million acres in total. Unsurprisingly, Mississippi is also the #1 producer of farm-raised catfish in the US. The state hosts several national parks, including the Natchez Trace Trail, which cuts through both Alabama and Tennessee and serves to commemorate the Native American passage.
One of the most widely-known public research institutions in the state is the University of Mississippi, better known as "Ole Miss". This school is located in Oxford and, in the 2011-12 academic year, enrolled 20,844 undergrad students in total. Ole Miss research focuses on health, education, safety, and culture, according to the university website.
Mississippi College is another notable state institution. It is a private Christian school located near Jackson, the state capital, and lays claim to being the first higher learning establishment in the state. Mississippi College offers 14 graduate degrees, inc
