Accredited Online and On-Campus Colleges in Mississippi

best_colleges_online_mississippiMississippi’s higher education system is comprised of 25 community colleges, 10 private colleges, and 9 public universities, according to NCES.ed.gov.

These reputable establishments receive regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, one of the top six most recognized and reputable accreditation agencies in the nation.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges accredits degree-granting institutions in the 11-state southern region of the United States. This includes public, private, and for-profit colleges. Colleges and universities that want to obtain and maintain regional accreditation must meet commission standards in a variety of fields. Accreditation depends on the quality of the school’s mission, administration, resources, institutional effectiveness, and faculty, as well as commitment to continuous improvement.

Colleges in Mississippi can also become eligible for national accreditation through agencies like the Distance Education and Training Council or the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. The U.S. Department of Education recognizes both regional and national accreditation agencies.

Rankings

EDsmart has sifted through the data trenches to design a fully comprehensive and straightforward ranking of the best online colleges in Mississippi.

Schools are ranked based on four data points in three categories:

  • Affordability (financial aid, net price)
  • Student Satisfaction (retention rate)
  • Student Outcome (4-year graduation rate)

Each data point is ranked with equal interest. Schools receive a weighted overall score for each individual point mentioned above, with 100 being the highest score possible.

In the case of a tie, the average net price is the determining factor for which school receives a higher rank. The lower the net price, the higher the ranking.

All data was gathered from the National Center for Education Statistics website and is accurate at the time of this writing [June 2019].

Overview

Mississippi inherits its name from the river system that served as America’s gateway to the west for over 100 years. The Mississippi River spans more than 2,300 miles, stretching from Minnesota down to the Gulf of Mexico, and cutting through a larger tract of land than any river system on the North American continent. The state of Mississippi itself boasts a population of almost 3 million people, and the state capital of Jackson is home to 173,000 alone.

With such a humid and subtropical climate, agriculture is still a substantial component of Mississippi’s economy. This industry employs 30% of the population, both directly and indirectly. Poultry and eggs are at the top of the state’s production list, followed by forestry, soybeans, corn, rice, catfish, hay, cattle, cotton, and more. The state is home to 42,000 working farms that cover 11 million acres in total. Unsurprisingly, Mississippi is also the #1 producer of farm-raised catfish in the US. The state hosts several national parks, including the Natchez Trace Trail, which cuts through both Alabama and Tennessee and serves to commemorate the Native American passage.

One of the most widely-known public research institutions in the state is the University of Mississippi, better known as “Ole Miss”. This school is located in Oxford and, in the 2011-12 academic year, enrolled 20,844 undergrad students in total. Ole Miss research focuses on health, education, safety, and culture, according to the university website.

Mississippi College is another notable state institution. It is a private Christian school located near Jackson, the state capital, and lays claim to being the first higher learning establishment in the state. Mississippi College offers 14 graduate degrees, including Juris Doctorate and Doctorate of Education degrees.
