Mississippi’s higher education institutions seek regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, one of the six most recognized and reputable accreditation agencies in the nation.

The association’s Commission on Colleges accredits degree-granting institutions in the 11-state southern region of the United States. This includes public, private, and for-profit colleges. Colleges and universities that want to obtain or maintain regional accreditation must meet the commission’s high standards in areas such as mission, governance, resources, institutional effectiveness, and faculty, as well as commit to continuous improvement.

Colleges in Mississippi can also become eligible for national accreditation through agencies like the Distance Education and Training Council or the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. Both regional and national accreditation agencies are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Rankings

best_colleges_online_mississippiEDsmart has dug through the data trenches to bring you an easy to read, easy to digest ranking of the best online colleges in Mississippi.

Schools are ranked based on four data points in three categories:

  • Affordability (financial aid, net price)
  • Student Satisfaction (retention rate)
  • Student Outcome (4-year graduation rate)

Each data point is ranked with equal weight. Schools received a weighted overall ranking score for each individual point mentioned above–100 being the highest score possible.

In the case of a tie in scoring, the average net price was the determining factor for which school received the higher rank–the lower the net price, the higher the ranking.

All data was gathered from the National Center for Education Statistics website and is accurate at the time of this writing [June 2019].

Overview

Mississippi takes its name from the river that forms most of its western boundary. The river system itself is the largest in North America, running more than 2,300 miles from Minnesota down to the Gulf of Mexico. Almost 3 million people live in Mississippi, with the largest city being the capital, Jackson, at 173,000. The southern state has a humid, subtropical climate. Agriculture is still the biggest component of the state’s economy, employing almost 30% of the population indirectly or directly. Poultry and eggs are at the top of the list, followed by forestry, soybean production, corn, rice, catfish, hay, cattle, cotton, and more. All told, there are 42,000 working farms in the state that cover 11 million acres. Additionally, the state produces most of the farm-raised catfish consumed in the country. There are a variety of national parks in Mississippi, including the Natchez Trace Trail, which also cuts through Alabama and Tennessee and commemorates the path that began as a Native American passage and was later used by explorers.

One of the best-known public research universities in Mississippi is the University of Mississippi, located in Oxford and better known as Ole Miss. Enrollment at Ole Miss was 20,844 for the 2011-2012 academic year, and research focuses on health, education, safety, and culture, the university’s website noted. Another important institution here is Mississippi College, a private Christian college near Jackson that lays claim to being the first institution of higher learning in the state. Mississippi College offers 14 graduate degrees including a Juris Doctor and the Doctor of Education.
