Self-Paced Online College: Degrees at Your Own Pace

by EDsmart Staff

Self-paced online programs let you work at different speeds. Some use competency-based education, or CBE. In CBE, you finish a course after you show mastery. Other programs let you start outside the usual semester. Examples include WGU, MyPath, YourPace, NAU Personalized Learning, and UND Enroll Anytime.

Self-paced does not mean deadline-free. Programs may set term limits, minimum progress rules, or financial aid requirements. This guide compares program formats and explains which schools are flexible but not fully self-paced. For the shortest published timelines, see fastest accelerated online degrees.

Key facts

  • CBE programs let you advance after showing mastery. Open-entry courses let you begin at more times during the year.
  • Four schools here have CBE options: WGU, UMass Global, UMPI, and Northern Arizona University.
  • School-wide cost and outcome figures may not describe students in the self-paced program. Check the official program page before applying.

What Self-Paced Actually Means

  • Competency-based (closest to “true” self-paced): You advance when you prove mastery. Flat-rate terms are common (WGU six-month terms; UMPI YourPace sessions; UMass Global MyPath).
  • Open-entry courses: Start outside the normal semester. UND Enroll Anytime gives students up to nine months to finish.
  • Flexible but paced online terms: Six- or eight-week asynchronous classes with weekly deadlines (many SNHU programs). Flexible scheduling is not the same as competency-based pacing.
