How old are college students, typically?

As someone returning to college in my late 20s, I've been thinking a lot about age diversity on campus. I know I'm starting my degree later than what might be considered "traditional," and I'm curious about how many other students are in a similar situation. What's the typical age range for college students in the US these days? I'd especially love to know how common it is to see other non-traditional students like myself in classrooms and around campus.

As a college graduate myself, I can tell you from experience that while most of my classmates were in the traditional 18-22 age range, there was actually quite a bit of age diversity on campus. When I attended school between 2002-2007, I had several classmates who were in their late 20s, 30s, and even some in their 40s and 50s.

The average college student is 26.4 years of age though.

From what I observed, the "traditional" students who came straight from high school were definitely the majority in my classes, but there was a significant presence of returning students and non-traditional learners. I particularly noticed this in evening classes and in certain majors like business and nursing, where many of my classmates were balancing their education with work and family responsibilities.

The age diversity really enriched our classroom discussions. I remember one marketing class where a returning student in her 30s brought invaluable real-world business experience to our group projects. Similarly, in my sociology courses, having classmates from different age groups and life stages led to much more nuanced discussions about social issues.

That said, I noticed the age distribution varied depending on the type of classes and time of day. Morning classes tended to have more traditional-age students, while evening classes had a higher proportion of older students who were working during the day.

According to national statistics from 2021, about 34% of undergraduate students were over 25, though this wasn't always evenly distributed across different institutions and programs.

Looking back, I really appreciated having classmates of different ages. It helped prepare me for the real world where you work with people of all ages, and it demonstrated that it's never too late to pursue your education.
