Accredited Online Colleges in Tennessee

Tennessee is home to a large number of colleges and universities.

The University of Tennessee was founded in 1794 and is the largest school in the state. Tennessee has a significant amount of faith-based schools, including Freed-Hardeman and Belmont University. Due to a steady increase in the popularity of distance learning, over 90 of the schools in Tennessee are now offering classes and degree programs online.

If you are interested in taking classes online, we recommend that you check the accreditation status of the school you are interested in before you enroll. Accreditation guarantees a standard of high-quality education and is often looked for by employers. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the regional accrediting agency for Tennessee. Many of the faith-based schools are accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education. To help you sort through the large array of schools offering online education in Tennessee, we have divided them into four categories: private schools, public schools, for-profit schools, and faith-based schools. You will also find contact information, the accrediting agency, and the programs that are offered by each school.

Rankings

best_online_colleges_universities_tennesseeEDsmart has dug through the data trenches to bring you an easy to read, easy to digest ranking of the best online colleges in Tennessee.

Schools are ranked based on four data points in three categories:

  • Cost (average net price)
  • Academic quality (graduation rate)
  • Student satisfaction (retention rate)
  • Salary After Attending (the median earnings of former students who received federal financial aid, at 10 years after entering the school)

Each data point is ranked with equal weight. Schools received a weighted overall ranking score for each individual point mentioned above–100 being the highest score possible.

In the case of a tie in scoring, the average net price was the determining factor for which school received the higher rank–the lower the net price, the higher the ranking.

All data was gathered from the National Center for Education Statistics and College Scorecard websites and is accurate at the time of this writing [August 2019].
