Find Your School In 5 Minutes Or Less

Many schools have rolling admissions, which means you can start a program in a few weeks.

This guide gives you two ways to compare popular online colleges. The first ranks schools by enrollment size (how many online undergraduates they report to the federal government). The second ranks them by search interest (how often Americans look them up on Google). Those lists can differ, and that is normal. Looking for methodology-based quality scores instead of popularity? See our best online colleges guide (21-school quality ranking; UF #1 in that pool). You can confirm enrollment on College Navigator or each school's site.

Two Rankings On This Page

We do not mix enrollment and search into one score. Pick the table that matches what you want to know.

  • Ranking #1 (primary): Enrollment size. Federal headcount for undergraduates enrolled fully online. Use this if you ask who has the most online students.
  • Ranking #2 (companion): Search interest. How often Americans Google each school name (Jul 2025–Jun 2026). Use this if you ask who gets searched the most. See the side-by-side comparison to view both ranks together.

Ranking #1: Largest By Enrollment Size

How We Rank By Enrollment Size

We rank schools by undergraduate students enrolled exclusively in distance education (fully online) as reported in the U.S. Department of Education's IPEDS database. This count excludes students who take only some courses online and excludes graduate-only online enrollment.

Source: U.S. Department of Education, NCES IPEDS Fall Enrollment derived file (DRVEF2023, Fall 2023 collection). We compute each count from IPEDS fields EFUG (undergraduate fall enrollment) and PCUDEEXC (percent of undergraduates enrolled exclusively in distance education). Verify current headcount on College Navigator or each institution's site.

Note: IPEDS reports some brands by campus unit (for example, University of Phoenix-Arizona). Industry roundups may aggregate multiple units or use 12-month totals, which can produce different ranks than this table.

Ranking #2: Most Searched By Search Interest

What Is Search Interest?

Search interest means how often people in the U.S. look up a college name on Google. We track it with Google Trends. A higher score means more people typed that school into Google during the period we measured.

Search interest shows name recognition and curiosity. It does not count enrolled students. It does not tell you whether a school is accredited, affordable, or right for your major. A college can enroll many online students and still get fewer Google searches than a brand that is more famous or more often looked up.

We pulled four U.S. Google Trends exports from July 6, 2025 through June 28, 2026. Each export compares a small group of schools with Southern New Hampshire University in every group as the baseline (SNHU = 100). Each week, we divided each school's Trends score by SNHU's score, then averaged those weekly ratios across all four groups.

Google Trends does not report raw search counts. It shows relative interest within each comparison query. Our scores answer a simple question: compared to SNHU, how often was each school searched during this period?

Example: a score of 155 means Americans searched that school about 55% more often than SNHU during this period. A score of 50 means about half as much search activity. The four comparison groups were: (1) SNHU, WGU, Phoenix, Liberty; (2) SNHU, Grand Canyon, UMGC, APUS; (3) SNHU, Walden, Capella, Columbia Southern, UoPeople; (4) SNHU, ASU Online, Purdue University Global.

Three Patterns To Notice

  • Higher on search than enrollment: WGU, Grand Canyon University, and Liberty University punch above their headcount on Google. People search these names often even when federal enrollment counts are lower than SNHU or Phoenix.
  • Higher on enrollment than search: Arizona State University Digital Immersion, UMGC, APUS, and University of the People enroll many online undergraduates but get fewer relative Google searches than GCU or Liberty.
  • Search-led, not size-led: Walden University and Capella University rank #6 and #7 on search interest but sit outside our enrollment top 10. That usually means strong name recognition in specific adult-learner or graduate-heavy niches, not the largest undergraduate online headcount.

What Is Search Interest?

Search interest is how often people in the U.S. look up a college on Google. We measure it with Google Trends. It shows which school names get typed into Google most often. It does not count enrolled students and it is not a quality ranking.

What Is The Difference Between Largest And Most Searched Online Colleges?

Largest means the most online undergraduate students, based on federal IPEDS enrollment data. Most searched means the most Google lookups, based on Google Trends. SNHU enrolls the most online undergraduates in our table. WGU gets the most search interest. We keep two separate tables because headcount and Google curiosity are different measures.

What Is The Largest Online College In The US?

By IPEDS Fall 2023 counts of undergraduates enrolled exclusively online, Southern New Hampshire University (154,863) ranks first, followed by Western Governors University (135,822) and University of Phoenix-Arizona (80,637). Largest is not the same as highest quality; see our best online colleges guide for methodology-based scores.

What Is The Biggest Online College In The US?

Under IPEDS Fall 2023 undergrad-exclusively-online counts, SNHU, WGU, and University of Phoenix-Arizona are the three largest. WGU uses a competency-based model with flat six-month terms; SNHU offers 200+ online programs with rolling starts; Phoenix has long focused on working adults with frequent start dates.

What Are The Big 3 Online Colleges?

The "Big 3" usually means the three largest online providers by federal headcount. Under IPEDS Fall 2023 undergrad-exclusively-online counts, they are Southern New Hampshire University (154,863), Western Governors University (135,822), and University of Phoenix-Arizona (80,637). Google search interest ranks WGU first, not SNHU. Popularity is not the same as quality; see our best online colleges guide for methodology-based scores.

What Are Some Popular Online Colleges?

Popular online colleges with large online enrollments include SNHU, WGU, University of Phoenix-Arizona, Arizona State University Digital Immersion, Grand Canyon University, and others in our enrollment table. By Google search interest (SNHU = 100), WGU, SNHU, GCU, and Liberty rank highest. Popularity here means enrollment size or search volume, not EDsmart quality scores.

What Is The #1 Online College In The US?

"#1" depends on the question. For largest IPEDS Fall 2023 undergrad-exclusively-online enrollment, SNHU leads (154,863), followed by WGU (135,822). For most U.S. search interest, WGU leads (155 vs. SNHU = 100). For methodology-based quality scores in EDsmart's curated pool, University of Florida ranks #1 on our best online colleges page.

What Is The Best Online College Degree To Get?
