The first thirteen states in the U.S. were on the East Coast, so it’s not surprising that some of the most well-known colleges in America are there, too. Harvard University was created in 1636 which predates the US Declaration of Independence by 140 years. One of the nation's oldest institutions of higher learning, Harvard University, and a number of universities, both state and public, were established in the 13 colonies.

Well-known Ivy League schools such as Harvard and Yale have been known to be centers of excellence for a long time, especially for research and academics.
