Some “cheapest online master’s” results name schools that price graduate study differently from the federal graduate average we use above. Georgia Tech often appears for its low-cost online computer science master’s, but its whole-school graduate average is too high for this Top 10. Treat the options below as other paths—not missing Top 10 rows. Figures were checked on school sites in 2026.
- University of the People: Instruction and books are tuition-free. You still pay a $60 application fee and a per-course assessment fee—$430 for the M.Ed. (about $5,650 for 13 courses) or $490 for the MBA (about $5,940 for 12 courses). UoPeople does not take part in federal student aid.
- Georgia Institute of Technology (online M.S. in Computer Science): Published tuition for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 is $227 per credit hour for 30 credits, plus an online learning fee each term. A realistic total is about $8,930–$9,465. Older “under $7,000” figures usually counted tuition only at a prior $195 rate.
- American College of Education: ACE publishes itemized master’s costs. Its M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction works out to about $9,976. ACE says most of its master’s programs average near $10,000. ACE also does not take part in federal student aid.
- Western Governors University: You pay a flat price for each six-month term. The lowest graduate tuition we verified is $4,090 per term, plus a $200 resources fee ($4,290 total per term). A four-term finish on that path is about $17,160; six terms about $25,740. Rates change for terms that start on or after October 1, 2026.
- Fitchburg State University: Some other ranking sites put Fitchburg first on a low yearly tuition figure we could not find on the school site. Fitchburg’s own accelerated online M.Ed. (Educational Leadership, not for a teaching license) is about $385 per credit total, or about $12,705 for 33 credits. The accelerated online MBA is about $436 per credit, or about $13,080 for 30 credits.
How to lower the cost of an online master’s
Comparing prices is only half the job. These moves cut what you actually pay after published tuition.
- Pay-by-term schools: If you can finish more courses each term (WGU-style), total cost drops. Going slow raises it.
- Employer tuition benefits: Ask HR about reimbursement caps, preferred schools, and whether grades must be B or better.
- Transfer and prior learning: Bring in graduate credits or documented work experience when the program allows it.
- Residency and online rates: Prefer schools with one nationwide online rate if you live out of state. Watch for schools like Texas A&M International where out-of-state online rates jump sharply.
- Aid that is not a loan: Scholarships, grants, and assistantships beat taking graduate loans. File the FAFSA when the school uses federal aid.
