Best Online BSW Programs 2026: Top CSWE Degrees Ranked

by EDsmart Staff · Updated August 2026

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign ranks No. 1 on our 2026 list of the best online BSW programs, followed by Ohio State University and the University of South Florida. Each school offers an online or mostly online bachelor's in social work approved by CSWE (the Council on Social Work Education). You can take many classes from home, but you still need supervised field hours—usually in person at an approved agency near where you live. We order those schools using our overall college rankings and U.S. Department of Education data on graduation, cost after aid, student support, and earnings.

A BSW is a Bachelor of Social Work. Online programs let you finish much of the classwork at home. Social work is still hands-on. Programs approved by CSWE require field education. Most students complete those hours in person at an agency near home.

Best Online BSW Programs for 2026

To make this list, a school must offer a bachelor's in social work with online classes. The social work program must also be currently approved by CSWE (the Council on Social Work Education). We then order those schools using our overall college rankings. Each of the four pillars—graduation and retention, cost after aid, student support, and career outcomes—counts equally (25% each) in the April 2026 model. Card stats are schoolwide figures from U.S. Department of Education data used in that refresh (average net price, graduation, retention, and median earnings). They are not social-work-major-only pay. Other college sites sometimes show a different earnings horizon (for example, 10 years after entry), so totals can differ even when both come from federal data. See how we rank colleges.

How We Ranked the Best Online BSW Programs

A school must offer a bachelor's in social work with online classes. The social work program must also be currently approved by CSWE.

We sort those schools using our overall college rankings. We use U.S. Department of Education data in four areas: finishing on time, cost after aid, student support, and earnings after college. Each pillar counts equally—25% of the composite score in our April 2026 model.

Required in-person field hours do not keep a program off this list. CSWE requires at least 400 field hours in approved bachelor's social work programs. Plan on supervised practice at an approved site.

Formats vary. Some schools take first-year students. Others are degree-completion programs for people who already have college credits or an associate degree. Some classes are on your own schedule. Others meet live online.

What Is a BSW?

A BSW is a Bachelor of Social Work. It is an undergraduate degree that trains you to help people, families, groups, and communities.

You usually study human behavior, social policy, research, ethics, diversity, and case work. Approved programs also include field education. That is supervised practice in a real social service setting.

A BSW can lead to entry-level social work and human service jobs. It can also shorten graduate school. If your BSW is CSWE-approved, you may qualify for an advanced-standing MSW. That means fewer graduate credits later.

Can You Earn a BSW Fully Online?

You can take many BSW classes online. You should not expect the whole degree to stay at home. CSWE requires at least 400 hours of field education.

Online students usually complete field hours at an agency near home. Sites can include schools, hospitals, child welfare offices, community groups, behavioral health programs, and government agencies.

Some programs also require live video classes, skills labs, orientation, or a short campus visit. Read the delivery rules before you enroll, especially if you live far from campus.

Why CSWE Accreditation Matters

CSWE is the main group that reviews social work programs in the United States. CSWE approval means the program meets standards for courses, faculty, learning, and field work. This is called programmatic accreditation. It applies to the social work program, not the whole college.

Approval also matters for licenses and graduate school. Many states want a CSWE-approved degree. Shorter “advanced standing” MSW programs are built for students who already have an approved BSW.

College-wide accreditation is different. That review covers the school as a whole. CSWE approval covers the social work program only.

Social Work Salary and Career Outlook

Social workers earned a median wage of $61,330 in May 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. Pay changes by job type, location, experience, and education level. The specialty rows below use the same May 2024 BLS figures.

Social Work Occupation 2024 Median Pay
Social workers, all occupations$61,330
Social workers, all other$69,480
Healthcare social workers$68,090
Mental health and substance abuse social workers$60,060
Child, family, and school social workers$58,570

BLS expects social work jobs to grow 6% from 2024 to 2034, faster than average. About 74,000 openings per year are expected over the decade.

A BSW alone does not let you provide therapy or diagnose mental health conditions. Clinical social workers need an MSW, supervised clinical hours, and a state license.

How to Choose an Online BSW Program

  • CSWE approval: Confirm the social work program is currently approved.
  • Online format: Check if classes are on your own schedule, live online, hybrid, or need campus visits.
  • Field placement: Ask how the school helps distance students find sites and how far you may travel.
  • When you can start: Some programs take first-year students. Others need 45–60 transfer credits or an associate degree.
  • Total cost: Compare tuition, fees, books, tech costs, and travel for field hours.
  • Financial aid: Compare grants, scholarships, state aid, employer help, and federal aid.
  • Licensure: Read the rules in the state where you plan to work.
  • Later MSW plans: If you may earn an MSW, ask whether your BSW qualifies for advanced standing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions: Online BSW Programs

What does BSW stand for?

BSW means Bachelor of Social Work. It is an undergraduate degree in social work.

How long does an online BSW take?

A full bachelor's usually takes about four years of full-time study. If you already have an associate degree or many transfer credits, you may finish in about two years. Some degree-completion programs can be shorter.

Are online BSW programs really fully online?

Classwork may be fully online. Field education is still required. CSWE requires at least 400 field hours, so plan on an in-person internship or practicum.

Do online BSW programs need CSWE accreditation?

If you want to work as a social worker, strongly prefer a CSWE-approved program. Approval can affect state licenses and shorter MSW tracks.

Can you become a licensed social worker with a BSW?

Some states offer licenses at the bachelor's level. Other states need a master's degree for certain licenses or jobs. Check the board in the state where you plan to work.

Can a BSW graduate become a clinical social worker?

Not with the BSW alone. Clinical social workers need an MSW, supervised clinical hours, and a state license.

Is an online BSW respected?

Yes, when the school is accredited and the social work program is CSWE-approved. Employers and licensing boards usually care more about approval, training, field hours, and state rules than whether your classes were online.
